Monday: Pennsylvanians To Protest Governor Wolf At Site Of Recent Pipeline Explosion
Call For Immediate Halt to Natural Gas Infrastructure to Prevent Future Explosions & Tragedies
Salem Township, PA – Concerned Pennsylvanians, advocates, and organizations will gather on Monday, May 16th at 4:00 p.m. at the Park & Ride at the intersection of Routes 819 and 22, just yards from the scene of the recent Texas Eastern pipeline explosion, to call on Governor Wolf to immediately stop the pipeline build-out that will inevitably lead to more explosions and tragedies like the Texas Eastern explosion. Pennsylvanians will also demand Governor Wolf to lead the transition to clean, renewable, and safe energy.
On April 29th, the 30-inch interstate natural gas transmission pipeline exploded in Westmoreland County. About a dozen homes were evacuated and a man was injured, his home completely destroyed.
The explosion site was saturated with natural gas infrastructure. A 39 square mile natural gas storage facility sits beneath four pipelines, a compressor station, injection wells, a natural gas power plant, and natural gas wells in the area.
Over the past decade, Spectra Energy has paid $403,142 in fines related to its Texas Eastern transmission system. Just days before the explosion of the Texas Eastern, Governor Wolf let the fiscal code pass into law, despite the fact that it included a measure that moved $12 million in funds from alternative energy to pipeline incentivization.
